A significant development took place during the UNWTO General Assembly session on October 17, 2023, as a memorandum of understanding was signed.
The memorandum, signed by U. Shodiyev, Chairman of the Tourism Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Kh. Rahmetov, First Deputy Chairman of the Board of Uzbekistan Railways JSC, and P. Barletta, CEO of Italy's Arsenale Group, outlines the launch of a tourist train service connecting the historical cities of Uzbekistan.
This "Luxury Train Cruising" initiative is scheduled to commence operations by the end of 2026 and is being realized with the support of the Ministry of Investments, Industry, and Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Umid Shodiyev, Chairman of the Tourism Committee, expressed the key objectives of this cooperation:
"The goal of this cooperation is to introduce the rich cultural and historical heritage of Uzbekistan to the whole world, to further develop domestic and foreign tourism. The new tourist train will serve to bring tourists closer to the historical monuments of our country."
Uzbekistan has been actively working to establish itself as a prominent tourist destination in Central Asia. The launch of the Luxury Train Cruising service is a significant stride toward achieving this ambition. P. Barletta highlighted the country's rich architectural and historical heritage as a driving factor behind this collaboration:
"Uzbekistan has interesting architectural monuments and a valuable historical heritage; that's why we chose your country for the purpose of cooperation. It helps to discover its historical and cultural wealth."
This project offers both local and international tourists the opportunity to explore the enchanting beauty of Uzbekistan's historical cities, including renowned destinations like Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva.
