Germany-based Rhenus Logistics and Uzbekistan Railways are embarking on a new era of cooperation, marking a significant step in Central Asian logistics. An official agreement, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), outlines plans for the establishment of two joint ventures.
These joint ventures will oversee intermodal terminals in Uzbekistan and work on their expansion to meet the growing demand for containerized goods and commodities. The agreement, signed in the presence of Uzbekistan's Transport Minister Ilhom Mahkamov.
Rhenus-Uztemiryulkonteyner Partnership
The partnership is between Rhenus Logistics and Uztemiryulkonteyner, a subsidiary of Uzbekistan Railways. It paves the way for collaborative efforts to develop and operate intermodal terminals in Andijan and Samarkand, two strategically significant locations in Uzbekistan. These terminals will be designed and expanded to meet international standards and accommodate the anticipated growth in capacity and domestic rail freight volumes in the region.
Expanding Connectivity along the Middle Corridor
Tobias Bartz, CEO and Chairman of the Rhenus Group, highlighted the expected growth in demand for the transportation of containerized goods and commodities that connect with Europe's transport networks along the Middle Corridor. This corridor, which facilitates trade between Europe and Asia through Central Asia, is a vital trade route. The partnership's expansion plans align with the region's role in fostering greater connectivity along the Middle Corridor.
Heinrich Kerstgens, head of the project, emphasized the importance of investing in transshipment capacity in emerging regions like the Ferghana Valley and Samarkand. This investment not only enhances logistics capabilities but also opens doors for further long-term transport projects.
Second Expansion Step in Central Asia
This collaboration between Rhenus Logistics and Uzbekistan Railways marks Rhenus' second expansion in the Central Asian market. In June, Rhenus Logistics entered into a partnership with Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) with a similar objective – developing the Middle Corridor. This partnership focuses on developing transshipment facilities in Caspian Sea ports like Aktau and Kuryk, establishing logistics centers in the wider Caspian region, and creating a container hub in Aktau.
With plans to establish joint ventures, expand intermodal terminals, and enhance connectivity along the Middle Corridor, the partnership reflects a commitment to furthering trade and logistics capabilities in the region.
