Kazakhstan's Minister of Emergency Situations, Syrym Shariphanov, has revealed certain regions in the country are at a higher risk of dying from fires, media reports.
The number of fires increases every year with the onset of the heating period, and over 4,000 of them have been registered in the residential sector since the beginning of the year, resulting in 203 deaths, burns, and 193 poisonings. The regions with an increase in the number of fatalities due to fires are Shymkent, Zhambyl, Aktobe, and Karaganda.
Shariphanov noted a trend of lack of public interest in personal security and that residents of more than 10,000 homes refused preventive consultations in the current year. The Minister of Emergency Situations also highlighted the issue of preventing emergencies involving household gas use.
In September 2023, nine people were injured, and three died due to equipment failure that caused a gas mixture outbreak in two residential buildings in the Almaty region. Shariphanov identified a shortage of qualified specialists in the regions who monitor compliance with the requirements of safe operation of gas equipment of domestic consumers as a problem point. He also noted that since 2021, this function has been entrusted to Akimats and implemented by the housing inspectorate.
The Chairman of the Fire Service Committee, Nurbolat Derbisov, had earlier revealed that 99.9% of the education objects in Kazakhstan reported fire safety violations.
Earlier, Kazakhstan's President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, instructed to commission Astana's existing gas thermal stations in a phased manner to tackle the city's top three problems: heat, light, and water. He emphasized the importance of ensuring high-quality projects that meet the city's needs without any interruptions as it affects the country's reputation and image.
