From the 16 to the 22 of September, Uzbekistan is hosting its fifth European Mobility Week. This year, the initiative by the European Union extends to over 2600 cities in more than 40 countries, including locations on other continents.
The theme for 2023, "Preserve Energy," underscores the vital role of energy efficiency in advancing sustainable urban mobility, as highlighted in the event's official statement.
Charlotte Adrian, the European Union Ambassador to Uzbekistan, remarked, "Conserving and conserving energy play a critical role in combatting climate change, ensuring energy security, and improving the overall well-being of communities." During this week, residents are encouraged to opt for eco-friendly modes of transportation such as walking, cycling, and using the metro and trams (which are only available in Samarkand in Uzbekistan). September 22 marks World Car-Free Day.
The European Mobility Week in Uzbekistan is part of a global campaign organized annually by the European Commission in over 50 countries.
Uzbekistan took the pioneering step among Central Asian nations by joining the European Mobility Week (EMW) and promoting the concepts of sustainable mobility. Following the success of campaigns in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, this year marks the fifth edition of the campaign in Uzbekistan.
Having committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2030 after joining the Paris Agreement in 2018, Uzbekistan has already embarked on the path to combat climate change." - stated European Union.
To further solidify this commitment, in 2020, the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan officially recognized the European Mobility Week as an annual campaign of national significance.
