A tense atmosphere enveloped the picturesque Black Sea town of Tyulenovo on September 17 evening as a mysterious drone carrying explosives made an unexpected landing. In a swift and coordinated response, the Bulgarian army's bomb disposal team conducted a controlled explosion to neutralize the threat on September 18, as per an official statement from the country's defense ministry.
The situation unfolded when the drone, equipped with a suspicious payload, touched down near the rocky shoreline of Tyulenovo. Bulgarian authorities acted promptly, sealing off the area to ensure public safety while they assessed the situation. Mayor Marian Zhechev of the Shabla municipality, to which Tyulenovo belongs, confirmed that the drone had been discovered beside moored boats and described it as an "aircraft with standard ammunition."
Given the potentially volatile nature of the situation, the bomb disposal unit determined that transporting the drone with its explosives intact to another location was not feasible. Consequently, they chose to destroy it on-site through a controlled explosion, minimizing any potential danger to the local population.
While the origin and purpose of the drone remain unclear, Bulgaria's Defence Minister, Todor Tagarev, hinted at a connection to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
"We can certainly assume that it is related to the war that Russia launched against Ukraine," Tagarev told reporters. "This war is inevitably associated with increasing risks to our security."
However, he refrained from providing further details regarding the drone's origin and how it ended up in Bulgaria, a NATO member state.
Tyulenovo, a popular tourist resort nestled 70 kilometers (43 miles) south of the Romanian border, has found itself in the spotlight due to its proximity to Crimea. The peninsula was annexed by Russia in 2014 and has become a frequent target for Ukrainian drone attacks. The situation is further complicated by the recent discovery of drone fragments in Romania, presumably linked to Russian attacks on Ukraine's Danube ports across the border.
