In Italy, a tragic incident occurred as a winemaker lost his life while attempting to rescue a colleague who had fallen unconscious inside a wine tank, according to the Italian fire brigade. The authorities swiftly responded to an emergency call made on September 14, from the Ca'di Rajo winery, located in San Polo di Piave, a town in the northern Italian city of Treviso.
As per the fire brigade's report, a man in his forties bravely tried to save his fellow worker who had lost consciousness due to exposure to carbon dioxide fumes during repair work.
31-year-old Alberto Pin went to clean a wine tank, which had very little wine left at the bottom, but it was emitting toxic fumes. Alberto climbed into the tank without a respirator, which made him feel unwell and eventually caused him to lose consciousness. His colleague, Marco, rushed to help him, but he was so concerned about Alberto that he also forgot about protecting his own respiratory system.
As soon as Marco entered the tank, he too was exposed to the poisonous fumes lingering in the air and collapsed. However, his condition was far worse than Alberto's because Marco ended up with his face immersed in the remaining alcohol. When the ambulance arrived, called by other winery employees, it was already too late to save Marco as he had succumbed to the fumes. Alberto, on the other hand, survived, and he was transported to the hospital.
According ot CNN, Simone Chechetto, the owner of the winery, expressed profound grief, stating:
"We are overwhelmed with grief; these two men were like brothers, like sons to us. My thoughts are with these two men who grew up with us and their families."
He also conveyed hope for the injured young man's swift recovery, describing the incident as an "immense tragedy."
