On September 16, ANSA reported that Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will be making a visit to the troubled island of Lampedusa. This visit comes in response to a critical situation that has emerged due to the ongoing migration crisis.
As tensions continue to mount on Lampedusa, protests have erupted among migrants who await their transfer to other distribution centers.
The island experienced an unprecedented influx of illegal migrants, with over 6,000 arriving in just two days. In total, government data up to mid-August indicates that more than 120,000 migrants have reached Italy's shores since the beginning of the year, marking record numbers in recent history. The unstable situations in Libya and Tunisia, from where many of these migrants embark on their perilous journeys to Italian shores, are significant factors contributing to the ongoing influx. Subsequently, a significant number of migrants aspire to move to other European countries, although the responsibility for their reception ultimately falls on the initial arrival country.
In light of these challenges, several Italian mayors and governors have expressed their reluctance to accept additional migrants into their regions.
