Tragedy struck in Barcelos, Brazil, as a plane carrying tourists crashed, resulting in the loss of 14 lives, as reported by CNN Brasil. The confirmation of this devastating accident came from the city's mayor on a fateful September 16. The ill-fated plane was carrying a total of 12 tourists, in addition to a pilot and co-pilot, as outlined by CNN Brasil. Tragically, there were no survivors, with Brazil's Civil Defense confirming the grim outcome.
The purpose of the flight was for recreational fishing, and the crash was attributed to adverse weather conditions, particularly heavy rain during the landing phase. The inclement weather appears to have played a significant role in this tragic incident, Reuters reported.
Wilson Lima, the Governor of Amazonas state, expressed his deep regret over the tragedy, stating,
"I deeply regret the death of the 12 passengers and two crew members who were victims of the plane crash in Barcelos on Saturday."
He also conveyed his sympathy and prayers to the families and friends of the victims.
Manaus Aerotaxi airline acknowledged the accident in a statement and noted that an investigation was underway. However, they did not provide specific details regarding casualties or injuries. The airline emphasized the importance of respecting the privacy of those involved during this challenging time.
The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) disclosed that investigators from the Accident Investigation and Prevention Center (CENIPA) had been summoned to initiate an inquiry into the causes of the crash involving the small aircraft, an Embraer Bandeirante registered as PT-SOG.
Governor Lima, in an interview with O Globo newspaper, mentioned that the bodies had already been recovered from the plane and identified the victims as Brazilian tourists. He suggested that heavy rainfall in the region and a probable error in the landing route were the most likely factors contributing to the accident.
