A minimum of five individuals have tragically lost their lives, while three others are currently missing as a result of floods triggered by intense rainfall in the central region of Spain. Numerous towns have become isolated due to road and bridge damage, prompting local authorities to advise residents to remain indoors and refrain from using personal vehicles.
According to Euronews, local residents recounted their experiences, mentioning how they noticed the water levels rising. They ventured to inspect the river, and during that moment, one of the bridges collapsed.
In the Toledo region, helicopters were dispatched to rescue those in need, and local residents had to seek refuge on the rooftops of their homes. The municipality of Buenaсhe-de-Alarcón in Castile-La Mancha was particularly hard-hit by the powerful storm, with one resident expressing that virtually everything in their home, except for the floor and walls, was lost and ready to be discarded.
In anticipation of record-breaking rainfall and flooding, Madrid is making preparations. The heavy rains in Spain have sadly resulted in loss of life, with roads blocked and train services disrupted in the affected region. The local authorities are in the process of evaluating the extent of the damage caused by this natural disaster.
In response to this crisis, Madrid and Castile-La Mancha are planning to approach the Spanish government to request the designation of the affected municipalities as "disaster areas."
