A supporter of corporal punishment of students, identified as Qari Qudratullah, who served as the mullah of a mosque in the Shirin Taghab region, has been arrested in Faryab province, Afghanistan. The arrest comes after footage from two weeks ago surfaced on the internet, depicting Qari Qudratullah physically assaulting a student from his madrasah (Dar ul-Huffaz).
The video raised significant concerns, prompting action from the local department of culture and information of the Taliban, which now governs Afghanistan. The Taliban stated that the video was the primary reason for the teacher's arrest, and he is currently under investigation. Moreover, several other students who were subjected to similar treatment by Qari Qudratullah have come forward and provided testimonies against him, Sputnik Afghanistan reported.
Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesperson for the Taliban, asserted that such actions, involving the corporal punishment of students, are considered criminal offenses and subject to legal consequences under the Taliban's governance.
Earlier Daryo reported that the Taliban assaulted a dormitory at Faryab University in Afghanistan's Faryab region, where they forcibly shaved the heads of 29 students.
