Hafiz Hamdullah, the spokesman for the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), a significant political alliance, was injured in a bomb attack on his vehicle in Mastung, Balochistan province, Daryo correspondent in Afghanistan reported. The incident occurred on September 14, and it is believed to be the result of ongoing security concerns in the region.
Hafiz Hamdullah is associated with the Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) party, which is part of the PDM. The JUI-F had previously faced a deadly attack in July when a political rally was bombed by the Daesh group, resulting in more than 50 fatalities.
Details of the Attack
Police have reported that 11 people were traveling in the van with Hamdullah when it was targeted by a bomb. The explosion occurred near the Choto area of Mastung city while Hamdullah was en route to a party meeting in the Manguchar district Kalat. Hafiz Hamdullah survived the attack but sustained leg injuries. He is currently receiving treatment at the Civil Hospital in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan. Nine other individuals who were injured in the blast are also being treated at the Trauma Center at the Civil Hospital.
Calls for Investigation and Security Concerns
Caretaker Chief Minister Balochistan, Ali Mardan Domki, has called for a swift investigation into the incident and vowed to utilize all available resources to apprehend the perpetrators. He strongly condemned the attack on innocent people, emphasizing that those targeting civilians should not receive any leniency.
As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack in Balochistan. The region has a history of ethnic Baloch guerrillas opposing the government, citing exploitation of Balochistan's abundant gas and mineral resources as a primary grievance.
The JUI-F advocates for a democratic, parliamentary system and has shown support for the Afghan Taliban, who are ideological rivals of the Daesh group. The attacks on the JUI-F, including the recent one on Hafiz Hamdullah, are seen as potential threats to the democratic process as Pakistan prepares for elections, likely in March. These incidents raise concerns about the security and stability of the region during this political transition.
