Maria Ressa, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has been acquitted of the latest of the five charges related to tax evasion. Earlier this year, in January, she was cleared of four other charges.
According to Euronews, Ressa asserts that the accusations against her were politically motivated, with judges acting under the influence of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
Ressa and her organization have been outspoken critics of Duterte's harsh measures in tackling drug-related crimes, resulting in the deaths of thousands of suspected drug traffickers.
Furthermore, Maria Ressa has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court against her conviction for libel.
Maria Ressa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021, sharing it with Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov, the chief editor of "Novaya Gazeta."
