Luis Rubiales is scheduled to make an appearance in a Spanish court on September 15 in response to a legal complaint lodged against him, DW reports.
The complaint pertains to an incident in which he forcibly kissed football forward Jenni Hermoso on the lips. This controversial act led to Rubiales stepping down from his role as the president of the Spanish football federation on September 10, amidst a period of intense criticism.
The kiss, which took place on August 20 after Spain's World Cup final victory, sparked widespread condemnation both in Spain and globally. In response to this incident, Hermoso filed a legal complaint against Rubiales just last week. She issued a statement asserting that the kiss had been unwelcome and had left her feeling vulnerable as if she had been a victim of assault.
She emphasized that she had not given her consent for the kiss. While Rubiales had previously apologized for the kiss, he maintained that it had been mutual. Furthermore, he resigned from his position as vice president of the UEFA, the European football body.
FIFA, the international football governing body, imposed a provisional 90-day suspension on Rubiales, and an ongoing investigation may result in an extension of his suspension. In response to Rubiales' resignation, several Spanish government ministers who supported Hermoso celebrated the development.
