Luis Rubiales resigns after scandal over alleged non-consensual kiss

Luis Rubiales resigns after scandal over alleged non-consensual kiss

The President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, has announced his resignation amidst a scandal sparked by allegations of non-consensual kissing by Spanish football star Jenni Hermoso. The controversy has shaken Spanish football and led to legal complaints and investigations, BBC reported.

    Allegations and Resignation

Jenni Hermoso, aged 33, alleged that a kiss from Luis Rubiales following Spain's victory over England was non-consensual, prompting her to file a legal complaint. Following these accusations, Rubiales, aged 46, submitted his resignation, stating that he could not continue in his role amidst the ongoing controversy.

    Investigations and Fallout

The fallout from the incident has been substantial. A prosecutor filed a complaint with Spain's high court against Rubiales for sexual assault and coercion, following Hermoso's testimony. Rubiales had previously claimed the kiss was "mutual and consensual" but was provisionally suspended by FIFA.

Hermoso's complaint, initially of sexual assault, now includes an allegation of coercion. The court will assess the complaint and decide whether to proceed with an investigation that could result in charges against Rubiales. Sexual assault under Spanish law carries potential penalties ranging from fines to four years in prison.

The scandal led to a significant impact on Spanish football, including the sacking of World Cup-winning manager Jorge Vilda and the resignation of Rubiales from his position as vice-president of Uefa's executive committee. Additionally, 81 Spain players, including all 23 World Cup winners, declared they would not play for the national team as long as Rubiales held his position.

    Support and Political Response

Jenni Hermoso received support from her club, Pachuca, in Mexico, where she was warmly welcomed and honored with a mural celebrating her achievements with the Spanish national team. Spanish politicians, including Spain's acting Labour minister and equality minister, expressed their support for Hermoso and signaled the changing dynamics in addressing such issues.

The scandal involving Luis Rubiales and Jenni Hermoso has had significant repercussions in Spanish football, resulting in Rubiales' resignation and legal proceedings against him. The case highlights the importance of addressing allegations of sexual misconduct and the evolving response within the sports industry. The outcome of the high court's decision will determine the future course of this controversy.

Earlier Daryo reported that femands for the resignation of the Spanish football chief emerged following a sexist controversy: he kissed Spanish forward Jennifer Hermoso on the lips after defeating the English national team.
