Uzbekistan aims to triple Malaysian tourist arrivals in ambitious tourism drive

Uzbekistan aims to triple Malaysian tourist arrivals in ambitious tourism drive

Uzbekistan is setting its sights on attracting a higher number of Malaysian tourists, with the ambitious target of tripling visitor arrivals from nearly 4,500 in 2019 to 12,000 by the end of this year. The Central Asian nation is employing a multifaceted approach that includes collaboration with Uzbekistan Airways, trade partnerships, and intensified consumer outreach campaigns to achieve this goal.

Ravshan Usmanov, Uzbekistan's ambassador to Malaysia, emphasized the vital role of Uzbekistan Airways in this endeavor. He announced that the airline had resumed regular flights from Tashkent to Kuala Lumpur on November 1, 2022, with twice-weekly services. Additionally, starting from October 30, a third service will be introduced, enhancing accessibility between the two countries. Flight departures from Kuala Lumpur are scheduled for Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Notably, Uzbekistan Airways is currently the only Central Asian carrier offering regular services to Kuala Lumpur. Malaysian passport holders also benefit from the convenience of 30-day visa-free entry to Uzbekistan, making it an attractive gateway for exploring other Central Asian destinations.

Uzbekistan, a destination still relatively unexplored by many Malaysian travelers and outbound travel agents, is strategically positioned at the crossroads of the Great Silk Road. Throughout history, it has been a melting pot of diverse cultures and civilizations. The country boasts world-famous pre-Islamic, Islamic, and Buddhist shrines, alongside modern tourism infrastructure in cities like Bukhara, Samarkand, Khiva, Termez, and Tashkent. These factors make it a compelling destination for tourists from various ethnic backgrounds in Malaysia.

Uzbek cuisine remains a hidden gem, waiting to be discovered by the myriad of tourists who venture into Uzbekistan. Uzbek cuisine is a delightful fusion of flavors influenced by its history as a crossroads of cultures. Pilaf (plov), kebabs, and manti (dumplings) are some of the delectable dishes that Malaysian food enthusiasts will savor. The opportunity to try authentic Uzbek cuisine is an enticing aspect of visiting the country.

In addition, Uzbek people are known for their warm hospitality and friendliness towards visitors. Malaysian tourists can expect to be welcomed with open arms and experience the famous Uzbek hospitality firsthand.

Beyond its cultural attractions, Uzbekistan also offers stunning natural landscapes. From the picturesque Chimgan Mountains to the serene Charvak Reservoir, nature lovers will find plenty to explore and appreciate.

To increase awareness of Uzbekistan as a travel destination, the Uzbekistani embassy is planning a familiarization trip (fam trip) for outbound travel agents and invited media, coinciding with the Tashkent International Tourism Forum, a B2B2C travel mart scheduled from November 15 to 17.

Recently, Uzbekistan made its presence felt at the MATTA Fair in Kuala Lumpur. During the event, six inbound agents from Uzbekistan collaborated to bolster brand recognition. The country also invested in strategically placed billboard advertisements throughout high-traffic areas in Kuala Lumpur. Furthermore, television documentaries showcasing Uzbekistan's rich food culture and Islamic heritage were produced to captivate potential Malaysian visitors.

Madina Tagaeva, the founder of Another Travel, an inbound agent from Uzbekistan, disclosed that her company has primarily catered to Muslim travelers from Malaysia keen on exploring Uzbekistan's Islamic heritage and culture. However, at the recent MATTA Fair, her efforts expanded to reach the non-Muslim market. This included highlighting Uzbekistan's historical and architectural treasures, as well as its appeal to food enthusiasts.

As Uzbekistan and Malaysia continue to collaborate in promoting tourism, the stage is set for a cultural exchange that promises to benefit both nations. With improved air connectivity, a welcoming visa policy, and a diverse range of attractions, Uzbekistan is becoming an increasingly appealing destination for Malaysian travelers seeking new experiences and adventures.
