Five Italian railway workers were tragically killed during the night leading into August 31 while engaged in track replacement activities on the Milan-Turin railway line. The owner of the state railway network, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), confirmed this incident.
As per the information from the Italian news agency ANSA, the train involved was traveling at a speed of around 160 kph (100 mph) when the accident occurred.
Regarding the details of the accident, the five workers were conducting track maintenance work near the Brandizzo station, located on the outskirts of Turin. During this time, a train transporting wagons struck them around midnight. Fortunately, two of their colleagues, including the foreman, managed to avoid the goods train and remained unharmed. The train's driver experienced shock but sustained no physical injuries, as reported by ANSA.
Paolo Bodoni, who serves as the mayor of Brandizzo, expressed profound sorrow over the incident, referring to it as a "tremendous tragedy." He indicated that there is a possibility of a communication error having played a role in the accident, and noted that an investigation is currently in progress.
RFI, the organization responsible for managing the railway infrastructure in Italy, issued a statement extending their condolences and support to the families of the victims.
