Uzbekistan's capital, Tashkent, on August 31, held a commemorative event in honor of the Day of Memory of Victims of Repression. During the proceedings, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev presented a proposal to affix nameplates on the residences of citizens subjected to repression in the Soviet era.
The President believes it is essential to continue efforts to acknowledge and remember the victims of repression and promote knowledge and understanding of their experiences. Shavkat Mirziyoyev also called for the creation of grants to support research into the Jadids' history and for producing documentaries and feature films about their experiences.
He emphasized that it is essential for young people to understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by their ancestors in the fight for freedom and independence.
Mirziyoyev identified two main periods of repression in Uzbekistan - the 1930s and 1950s and the 1980s - and announced the publication of a mass edition of the Books of Remembrance, including information about nearly 40,000 repressed people of Uzbekistan.
The President also noted that significant progress has been made in recent years to rehabilitate those who were unjustly accused and punished during this time and called for continued efforts to uncover the truth about this dark period in Uzbekistan's history.
