Following a military takeover, Gabon's incumbent president is now under house arrest with family and doctors, as reported by France-Presse. The military statement, broadcasted on Gabon's state television, revealed President Ali Bongo's confinement at home. Additionally, one of the president's sons has been detained for "treason against the state."
On August 30, it was announced that the current president of Gabon, Ali Bongo Ondimba, won the presidential election with 64.2% of the vote. Opposition figure Albert Ondo Ossa secured 30.7%.
Subsequently, the military declared the election results canceled and dissolved the institutions of power on television. They asserted their intention to change the regime in the country. Gunfire echoed in the capital, Libreville, and the rebels closed the borders "until further notice." The political faction supported by the military remains unclear.
In January 2019, an unsuccessful coup attempt occurred in Gabon. A group of military personnel seized control of the state radio station's office and broadcasted a communiqué about the creation of the National Restoration Council. Hours later, media reported the arrest of the mutinous soldiers.
According to RIA news, they pledged to uphold the country's commitments to the international community. Gabon is a member of the OPEC+ alliance of oil-exporting nations. The main port in Libreville, Gabon, has halted operations.
