Approximately 20,000 backers of the newly established military rule convened at Niamey's stadium in Niger's capital for a significant demonstration, Euronews has reported.
Swinging flags of Niger, Russia, and Algeria, they voiced their demand for French diplomats and military personnel to exit the nation. The coup leaders issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the French ambassador on August 25.
Bachirou Amadou, a senior figure within the National Council for Homeland Defense, conveyed,
"We conveyed the message for them to relinquish our country. However, it's your task to expel them. To effectuate their departure, avoid visiting the embassy. If the momentum persists, they will vacate."
France, with its hundreds of stationed troops in Niger, dismissed the coup leaders' request, contending that they lacked the requisite authority to dictate such terms.
The appointed head of Niger's armed forces, assigned by the junta, directed all military units to uphold elevated combat readiness on Saturday, preparing for the potential intensification of the situation.
Residents have been advised to promptly report any suspicions of adversarial actions to the authorities.
