The World Health Organization (WHO) is facing a critical funding challenge for its operations in Afghanistan, with potentially dire consequences outlined in a recent report. The report paints a grim picture of the potential fallout if the WHO does not receive sufficient funds to sustain its essential healthcare programs in the country, Sputnik Afghanistan reported.
The consequences of inadequate funding for the WHO's operations in Afghanistan are multifaceted and impact various aspects of healthcare and well-being for the population. The report provides a stark breakdown of the potential outcomes:
Maternal and newborn health: Without the necessary funding, an estimated 24 mothers and 167 newborns would die daily due to the lack of adequate medical care and interventions.
Child malnutrition: Approximately 875,000 minors would face malnutrition, and this dire situation would pose a severe threat to the lives of 45,000 of them.
Polio vaccinations: As a result of insufficient funds, around 11 mn minors would be deprived of polio vaccinations, jeopardizing their health and well-being.
Medical facility support: The funding shortage would lead to a reduction of support for 520 medical facilities, potentially resulting in minimal or zero functionality.
Disease outbreaks: The WHO's ability to detect and respond to up to 900 disease outbreaks per year would be compromised, leaving the population vulnerable to the spread of various diseases.
Medical assistance: A staggering 8 mn people would not receive essential medical assistance, and additional breakdowns include 1.2 mn individuals lacking crucial medical information, 1.6 mn needing psychological support, 450,000 requiring traumatological care, and 300,000 women without access to obstetric care.
To avert these catastrophic outcomes, the WHO urgently requires an additional $125 mn by the end of 2023. The funding shortfall not only puts the lives of Afghan citizens at risk but also threatens the country's overall healthcare infrastructure, further exacerbating the challenges faced by a population already grappling with numerous uncertainties.
