Iranian Parliamentary delegation arrives in Kabul to discuss border security

Iranian Parliamentary delegation arrives in Kabul to discuss border security

A high-level parliamentary delegation from Iran, led by Javad Karimi Kuddusi, a prominent deputy from Mashhad associated with the "conservative wing" of Iranian politics, arrived in Kabul to engage in negotiations with the acting Foreign Minister of the Taliban, Amir Khan Muttaki. The talks focused on a range of critical issues concerning both countries, including border security, counterterrorism efforts, the fight against drug trafficking, trade relations, and economic cooperation, Sputnik Afghanistan reported.

One of the primary topics discussed was the issue of ensuring border security. Iran expressed concerns about smuggling and illegal migration across the shared border. The Taliban assured the Iranian delegation of their commitment to address these challenges effectively and collaborate closely to maintain border security.

Counterterrorism efforts were another key point of discussion. The Taliban claimed to have eliminated the Islamic State (IS) as a significant threat within Afghanistan. The Iranian delegation sought further details and reassurances regarding this assertion, emphasizing the importance of eradicating all forms of terrorism in the region to ensure stability.

The eradication of drug trafficking was also a central theme. The Taliban leadership asserted that they had made substantial progress in curbing the cultivation of opium poppy, which is a major source of illegal drugs. They highlighted ongoing efforts to rehabilitate drug addicts and expressed a commitment to continue cooperating with Iran to combat the drug trade effectively.

On the economic front, discussions revolved around the transit of Iranian goods through Afghanistan and the potential market for Iranian products in the country. The Iranian delegation expressed its interest in leveraging Afghanistan's strategic location for trade, emphasizing that fostering economic ties would be mutually beneficial for both nations.

The Taliban leadership acknowledged the economic potential of Afghanistan and agreed that expanding trade relations with Iran aligned with their priorities. They expressed their willingness to facilitate the transit of Iranian goods and to create a conducive environment for economic cooperation.

Overall, the talks between the Iranian parliamentary delegation and the Taliban leadership were characterized by a pragmatic approach from both sides. The engagement demonstrated a shared understanding of the need for collaboration in various domains to promote regional stability and economic development. The discussions marked a significant step towards a more constructive relationship between Iran and the new administration in Afghanistan.
