Uzbekistan, in cooperation with UNESCO, has introduced the UNESCO—Uzbekistan International Prize, named after Abu Rayhan Beruni, to encourage scientific dialogue and promote ethics in the realm of artificial intelligence.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed the decree on August 25, stating that the goal is to promote ethical considerations, inclusivity, and cultural diversity in the field of artificial intelligence.
According to the resolution, an international exhibition and various events celebrating the life and work of the scientist and philosopher will take place at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, from September 4-8.
Abu Rayhan Beruni was a prominent scholar and polymath during the Islamic Golden Age. He was well-versed in physics, mathematics, astronomy, natural sciences, history, linguistics, and more. He was also a gifted linguist conversing in several languages, including Khwarezmian, Persian, Arabic, Sanskrit, Greek, Hebrew, and Syriac. Beruni's scholarly objectivity earned him the title al-Ustadh ("The Master") in recognition of his remarkable description of early 11th-century India.
