Turkey's Erdogan may travel to Russia to hold talks with Putin

Turkey's Erdogan may travel to Russia to hold talks with Putin

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is preparing for a journey to Russia in order to engage in discussions with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. Initial reports from Erdogan's office had suggested that Putin would be the one visiting Turkey, but the Kremlin clarified that the exact location of the meeting had not been finalized, Yeni Safak reports.

The agenda for the meeting is expected to cover a range of topics, including bilateral relations, the situation in Ukraine, and the continuation of the grain deal. Sources indicate that Erdogan's upcoming visit holds significant importance as it signifies a key step toward maintaining the momentum of the grain agreement.

The President of Turkey's office has stressed the necessity of upholding the grain agreement with Russian involvement, suggesting that the continuation of the agreement in its previous form holds a strong significance from Erdogan's standpoint. Adding to the diplomatic engagements, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is also anticipated to embark on a visit to Russia in the near future.

    The Background of Putin-Erdogan Talks

Following their telephone discussions on August 2, the leaders of Turkey and Russia expressed their mutual intention to hold a face-to-face meeting. While Erdogan's office initially indicated that Putin would travel to Turkey for the meeting, the Kremlin took a different stance, asserting that the talks need not be confined to Turkish soil.

The current conditions, as the Kremlin indicates, might necessitate Putin's presence in Russia, although organizing the visit is proving to be a complex task. Turkish media sources have speculated that Putin's visit to Turkey might occur either in late August or early September.

Addressing the matter on August 21, Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his hope to meet Vladimir Putin in person on the sidelines of the upcoming G20 summit or the United Nations General Assembly, both scheduled for September. However, as of now, Putin has not officially confirmed his participation in these events.
