Former US President Donald Trump announced on August 21 that he will turn himself in to authorities in Georgia later this week, DW reports.
Trump revealed on his social media platform Truth Social that he is scheduled to visit Atlanta on August 24 with the intention of being apprehended. He alleged that the charges against him are politically motivated and aimed at undermining his potential re-election campaign.
In response to a 98-page indictment issued in Georgia last week, Trump and 18 other co-defendants are accused of conspiring to manipulate the election outcome and maintain Trump's presidency after his defeat to Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election. The indictment lists a total of 41 criminal charges related to efforts to overturn the election results in the state. A bond of $200,000 has been set for Trump, who has also been prohibited from making threatening statements on social media.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee stated in a court document that Trump is forbidden from engaging in any activities that may intimidate co-defendants or witnesses, or obstruct the legal process, including posting or reposting content on social media platforms.
This marks Trump's fourth indictment, with previous cases involving charges in New York linked to falsifying business records tied to payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Additionally, he faces two federal criminal cases—one involving the alleged mishandling of classified materials at his Mar-a-Lago estate, and the other accusing him of illicitly attempting to overturn the 2020 election results. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
As he campaigns in the Republican presidential primaries for 2024, Trump could spend a significant portion of the year entangled in legal proceedings. Despite being the frontrunner in the primaries, he has announced plans to skip the initial Republican debate scheduled for August 23.
