Luis Rubiales, the President of the Spanish Football Federation, issued an apology for his behavior towards Jenni Hermoso, a player on the women's national team.
According to Euronews, following her receipt of a gold medal, Rubiales unexpectedly kissed her on the lips, sparking criticism for what some considered a coercive act due to him holding her during the kiss.
Rubiales expressed regret over the incident, acknowledging his mistake while emphasizing his positive relationship with Hermoso and others. He clarified that the kiss was spontaneous and lacked malicious intent, occurring in a moment of heightened enthusiasm.
"There is one thing I regret: what happened between me and the player (Jenni Hermoso), with whom I have a great relationship, as well as with others. Of course, I made a mistake, and I must acknowledge that. It was done without any ill intent in a moment of great enthusiasm. What happened, happened, I think, very spontaneously."- stated Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish Football Federation.
This controversy emerged after the ceremony honoring the winners of the women's World Cup in football, during which Spain triumphed over England in the final match. Hermoso later shared on social media that she found the kiss repugnant. Spain's Minister of Sports also condemned Rubiales' actions as inappropriate.
