On August 11, the Iranian Foreign Minister engaged in discussions with President Ramaphosa at the Union Buildings in South Africa, which serves as the official seat of the government and the president's office. The meeting addressed several key topics, including Iran's potential membership in BRICS and bilateral cooperation agreements, Iranian media agency Mehr reported.
President Ramaphosa expressed the global significance of the BRICS summit and South Africa's interest in advocating for Iran's inclusion as a friendly nation within BRICS. He reiterated Pretoria's full support for Tehran's membership bid in the organisation.
Highlighting the importance of the agreements established during the joint commission meeting, Ramaphosa affirmed South Africa's commitment to implementing these agreements. He also conveyed optimism about the upcoming official visit of Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi, anticipating the signing of multiple cooperation documents to strengthen bilateral ties.
Amir-Abdollahian, prior to his visit, had outlined his intention to discuss both bilateral and international matters during his meetings with South African officials. Simultaneously, a delegation composed of Iranian deputy ministers and representatives from the private sector engaged in discussions with South African Foreign Ministry officials. Their aim was to finalise aspects of bilateral cooperation and prepare documentation for President Raeisi's imminent visit.
Amir-Abdollahian further disclosed that President Raeisi is slated to undertake two visits to South Africa. The first visit is scheduled for August 24, during which he will participate in the summit of the friends of BRICS. The second visit is projected for the fall, focusing on comprehensive discussions about bolstering bilateral relations.
The discussions and engagements between Iranian and South African officials underscore the diplomatic efforts to deepen cooperation and mutual understanding between the two nations. These interactions also reflect the global importance of platforms like BRICS in fostering collaboration among member countries.
