On August 2, Reuters reported that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to participate virtually in the upcoming BRICS summit in South Africa. The decision for virtual participation is not officially confirmed yet, but it seems that both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Modi may opt for virtual attendance.
Reuters informs about India's reservations about the expansion of BRICS, as China and Russia are keen to discuss this matter at the summit. India's discomfort with being part of groupings dominated by China, such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), is evident, especially as India strengthens its ties with the United States and other Western powers.
India's relationship with China has been strained since the border clash in 2020, leading to India's cautious approach towards Chinese-dominated forums. Despite inching closer to the US and Western countries, India has maintained its economic ties with Russia, leading to some frustration among Western capitals.
As India holds the presidency of the G20 and will host a summit of its leaders in September, it remains to be seen how India's foreign policy approach will play out in balancing its relationships with both China and Western powers.
