Donald Trump has been charged with accusations of attempts to overturn the 2020 election. The indictment includes charges of conspiracy to defraud the US, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.
Earlier today, at around 3 pm EST Trump's personal plane landed in Washington, DC from where he then was driven to U.S. District Court. The hearing which was supposed to start at 4 pm EST was delayed by around 15 minutes as the judge was late, BBC reports.
Around the beginning of the hearing, Trump pleaded not guilty to all four charges against him. And the prosecutors also stated that they have no intention of detaining him during pre-trial. "This case will benefit from normal order, including a speedy trial," said a prosecutor on behalf of the government before the hearing ended.
Earlier on August 1, the special counsel Jack Smith mentioned that he sought a "speedy trial" with Donald Trump.
John Lauro, one of Trump's lawyers stated that protecting the constitutional rights of the ex-president is as important as a "speedy trial."
The date of the next hearing was also announced during today's trial. While prosecutors asked for the closest date, the defence of Trump was successful in securing August 28, 3 pm BST for the next trial with Judge Tanya Chutkan. The full trial is set to begin on that date.
The hearing lasted about half an hour in total since the judge entered the room and ended with no precise results. Donald Trump is currently on his way back to his home in New Jersey.
