Three of Lizzo's tour dancers have filed a lawsuit against her on August 1, alleging sexual harassment, creating a hostile work environment through sexual, racial, and religious harassment, and wrongful termination, The Guardian reported. The lawsuit also accuses Lizzo's dance captain, Shirlene Quigley, of pushing her Christian beliefs on other performers and engaging in inappropriate behaviour.
The dancers, Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez, claim that Lizzo criticised one dancer's weight gain and fired her for recording a meeting. They also assert that Lizzo pressured one of them to touch a nude performer at a club in Amsterdam and subjected several dancers to a gruelling 12-hour audition based on false accusations of drinking while working.
The lawsuit names Lizzo (Melissa Viviane Jefferson), her production company Big Grrrl Big Touring, Inc, and Shirlene Quigley as defendants. The claims include sexual harassment, creation of a hostile work environment, false imprisonment, and interference with prospective economic advantage.
The incident at an Amsterdam club described in the lawsuit paints a disturbing picture of Lizzo allegedly pressuring cast members to engage in explicit and demeaning activities with nude performers. Despite Lizzo's public image as an advocate for body positivity and self-love, the plaintiffs believe that her actions towards the dancers contradict these values and are both illegal and demoralising. The lawsuit details instances where the plaintiffs claim to have faced mistreatment and discrimination, and their concerns were not addressed by management.
Lizzo's representatives have not yet responded to the allegations.
