The Moldovan authorities have made the decision to reduce the number of personnel at the Russian embassy. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Nikolai Popescu, announced this during a government meeting, as reported by TASS.
Popescu emphasized, "We have reached a consensus with the relevant institutions and decision-makers on the necessity to limit the number of Russian diplomats accredited in Moldova."
According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, the reason for taking such measures against Russian diplomats is due to suspicions that some embassy staff may be involved in destabilizing the situation in the republic. However, no evidence of Russian diplomats' involvement in such activities has been presented.
Prior to this, it was reported that Germany and Russia were expelling dozens of diplomats amid accusations from Berlin. The newspaper Bild reported that 34 out of 90 German diplomats would be leaving Moscow, accounting for roughly one-third of the entire German representation in Russia.
Furthermore, the U.S. Treasury Department had previously expanded sanctions on Russia.
