Khayot Shamsutdinov, the press secretary of Uzbekistan's General Prosecutor's Office, revealed that media publications had played a crucial role in uncovering 29 criminal cases in the Central Asian country within the last six months. As a result, 32 citizens have had their rights restored.
'In the first half of 2023, the prosecutor's office carried out various activities aimed at upholding the rule of law in the country. These actions focused on reinforcing legality, safeguarding citizens' rights and freedoms, protecting society's interests, and defending the state's legal protections. Additionally, they aimed to prevent and deter any violations that may occur',
he stated.
The authorities have prioritized the implementation of public oversight measures and a commitment to transparency regarding the operations of prosecutor's offices. Consequently, 309 crime and lawfulness reports were submitted by prosecutors to the Councils of People's Deputies and self-governing bodies of citizens. The Oliy Majlis also received pertinent information on this matter nine times.
Efforts to strengthen legality were focused on safeguarding citizens' legal rights and freedoms and protecting the interests of society and the state. These measures included a systematic review of legal documents from state bodies.
The results of these efforts are as follows: over 91,000 prosecutor's control documents were utilized; approximately 26,000 illegal documents were protested, with 14,000 submissions made to relevant agencies to address violations; over 15,000 petitions were submitted to courts for the recovery of financial sources; and the rights of 225,000 individuals were restored.
The Prosecutor's Office reviewed 678 critical articles in the media and took action accordingly. Besides, there were 496 instances where the Prosecutor's Office had to intervene due to the content of such materials.
