Turkmenistan, one of the world's top ten cotton producers, is preparing for the harvesting campaign, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov held a working meeting with the participation of heads of the agro-industrial complex and regional administration.
Currently, cotton crops are being tended, including inter-row cultivation, feeding with mineral fertilizers and irrigation. Cotton ginning enterprises and harvesters are also preparing for harvesting.
The cotton harvest traditionally begins in mid-September. Turkmenistan's Agriculture Ministry told Daryo that 1mn 250 thousand tons of cotton from 580 thousand hectares of land is to be harvested this year.
Most of the raw material is used to produce local jeans and textiles. All of these have become the country's "trade brand" and are sold through the global WalMart chain.
