Authorities in China's major cities have received directives to enhance preparedness for future emergencies by constructing recreational and entertainment venues that can double as quarantine facilities during pandemics, Bloomberg reports.
This decision comes several months after China lifted its strict containment measures for the virus. The plan involves creating "double emergency" facilities across urban areas, which would serve as popular tourist and recreational spots during normal times. However, in case of any future emergency, these venues would be repurposed as treatment and quarantine centers, as well as storage locations for essential supplies.
Deputy Prime Minister He Lifen emphasized that the development of new facilities is a crucial part of the country's infrastructure enhancement strategy aimed at ensuring both balanced development and national security. The initiative also seeks to involve private capital to support the construction projects.
