Portland, Oregon, was gripped by tragedy when a security guard lost his life in a shooting at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital, prompting a citywide manhunt for the suspect. The suspect was later killed in an encounter with the police, ending the terrifying ordeal.
The incident unfolded on July 22 around 11 a.m. PT when the Portland Police Bureau received reports of a potentially armed individual inside the hospital premises. Responding swiftly, officers arrived at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital in northwest Portland. Tragically, they discovered that shots had already been fired within the hospital premises.
While the courageous officers ensured that no patients were harmed during the chaotic situation, a hospital security guard sustained serious injuries in the shooting. He was immediately rushed to a Level 1 Trauma Center for treatment, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries, leaving the hospital staff and community devastated by the loss.
The suspect, having fled the hospital premises, triggered a large-scale manhunt, which led the authorities to track down the individual's location. The hospital was placed on high alert, and everyone inside was asked to shelter in place until the suspect was apprehended.
The manhunt culminated in the city of Gresham, about 15 miles east of Portland, where the suspect was located inside a vehicle. During the encounter, shots were fired by the police, resulting in the suspect's death. Fortunately, no law enforcement officers were injured in the exchange of gunfire.
In the wake of the heartbreaking incident, Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell expressed his condolences to the affected hospital staff and the security guard's family, friends, and colleagues. He commended the joint efforts of hospital staff and law enforcement in responding to the crisis, acknowledging their dedication and professionalism in the face of danger.
"This is a sad day for the staff at Legacy Health, and our hearts go out to the family, friends, and coworkers of the employees affected by today's tragedy. By all accounts, hospital staff and law enforcement did great work responding to this incident, and I'm grateful for the coordinated efforts by all," Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell stated.
As of now, the identities of both the victim and the suspect have not been disclosed to the public.
The safety of the hospital staff and patients remained a top priority throughout the ordeal. Legacy COO Jonathan Avery emphasized that the hospital was secure, but urged individuals to stay away from the premises until the situation was fully resolved and the all-clear was given. During the incident, the emergency department was temporarily put on diversion, meaning no new patients were accepted until the hospital authorities deemed it safe to resume regular operations.
The harrowing incident left the Portland community shaken, as it served as a stark reminder of the risks and challenges faced by security personnel and law enforcement officers who strive to protect public safety every day.
