Ukrainian President Zelensky reported that over the course of the last four days, Russia has launched about 70 missiles and 90 drones against Ukraine, Euronews has reported.
These attacks have had significant impacts, with the southern region and vital grain export infrastructure being the primary targets. The United Nations has expressed concern that such actions could be viewed as a violation of humanitarian law.
In response to the escalating situation, Ukrainian forces have begun using American-made cluster munitions during their counteroffensive, exerting pressure on Russian military formations. The situation has raised alarm globally, prompting the UN to condemn the intensified Russian shelling in Ukraine's southern areas, resulting in at least 27 civilian casualties and substantial damage to grain reserves.
Particularly troubling is the alleged targeting of Ukraine's port infrastructure by Russia, which is believed to be a strategic move to obstruct the resumption of food exports from the country. This act has been explicitly criticized by the UN, as it contradicts Russia's commitments made in the Memorandum of Understanding with the organization. The memorandum states that Russia will facilitate unobstructed exports of food, sunflower oil, and fertilizers from Ukraine's Black Sea ports.
The attacks have not been limited to the southern region, with other areas of Ukraine also facing aggression. For instance, Sumy Oblast has experienced drone attacks and periodic mortar shelling, causing further distress and insecurity for civilians in the region.
As the situation continues to escalate, President Zelensky's recent video address reaffirmed the severity of the crisis, highlighting the alarming number of missiles and drones fired by Russia at Ukraine in the span of just four days.
