In a significant development, Finnish police have successfully foiled a far-right terror plot that aimed to utilize 3D-printed weapons in a bid to plunge the country into chaos and trigger a "race war."
The National Bureau of Investigation recently revealed that their initial inquiry into a simple firearms offense led them to uncover a more extensive and sinister conspiracy involving at least four individuals with links to far-right ideologies.
Local media reports have identified one of the suspects in custody as a former municipal election candidate for the Finns Party, which forms part of Finland's coalition government. This revelation has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of the Nordic nation.
The suspects are believed to have been manufacturing submachine guns and other weapons using 3D printers. These illicit activities took place both in a rented garage and within the residence of one of the individuals. During their investigation, law enforcement authorities also confiscated a rifle, a homemade pen pistol, and a gas gun that had been converted into a firearm, along with 3D printers and cannabis plants.
As per Crime Commissioner Tuomas Kuure, the suspects' intended targets were selected based on their skin color, political affiliations, or other ideological views. The ultimate goal, it appears, was to ignite a violent "race war" in the country. Furthermore, in their conversations, the suspects had also discussed planning attacks on critical infrastructure, including the electricity network and rail traffic. Such actions had they come to fruition, would have dealt a significant blow to Finland's stability and safety.
The suspects had formed a highly radicalized group, characterized by their deep commitment to accelerationist ideologies. Moreover, these individuals had received specialized training in 3D weapons technology, signifying a dangerous level of preparation for committing acts of terror.
