Police in Germany recently conducted an extensive search for a possible lioness that was reportedly on the loose near Berlin. After employing drones, helicopters, and infrared cameras, and consulting with experts, they eventually called off the search, Euronews reports.
The incident began when people in Kleinmachnow, just outside Berlin, reported seeing what appeared to be a large cat chasing a wild boar. The informants even provided a video, leading police to initially believe that a lioness might be in the area.
Based on the video and a subsequent sighting, authorities concluded that there could be a potential danger, and the search was launched. However, despite their efforts and several reported sightings, no concrete evidence of a lioness was found.
The situation evolved on Friday when experts analyzed the video and compared the animal's body structure to that of a lioness. After independent assessments by two experts, it was determined that the creature depicted in the video was more likely a wild boar than a lioness. With this new information, the police decided to call off the search.
Kleinmachnow Mayor Michael Grubert addressed the media, confirming that the large deployment and search were justified considering the potential danger a wild animal could pose in the area. He also stated that the authorities would continue to be vigilant, but there is currently no acute danger to the residents of Kleinmachnow or the southern area of Berlin.
Grubert defended the decision to conduct the extensive search, which lasted for 36 hours and involved the use of helicopters, drones, and infrared cameras, as well as the participation of vets and hunters. He emphasized that safety was their top priority and that they would be ready to take immediate action if the situation changes.
