Turkmenistan, the largest energy exporter in Central Asia, saw its natural gas production increase by 8.3% year-on-year in the first half of 2023, while exports rose by 12.1%, local publication "Oil - Gas" reports.
Turkmenistan exports gas mainly to China, as well as to a number of CIS countries. Electricity is imported by Afghanistan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The country is also an exporter of oil products, polymers and synthetic petrol.
The information says that during the reporting period, oil production increased by 1.8%, its refining - by 2.5% compared to a year earlier, electricity - by 6.7% and its export - by 7.7%.
These figures were announced at an expanded government meeting, where it was also said that the gross domestic product (GDP) of the local economy grew by 6.2% from January to June 2023.
Local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports that President Serdar Berdimuhamedov instructed the government to ensure the country's financial and economic stability and increase employment.
