Nearly one-third of the US population is being impacted by a warning of extreme heat as a heat dome blankets the western part of the country and several southern states, Euronews has reported.
Meteorologists are forecasting an intensification of the heat, with some cities expected to reach temperatures of 48 degrees Celsius.
Miami, Florida issued its first-ever warning for excessive heat. Phoenix, Arizona has been experiencing temperatures over 45 degrees Celsius for more than two weeks, and the situation is expected to worsen in the coming days. The city has opened over 200 specialized cooling centers for people to find relief.
The heatwave has sparked wildfires in Southern California, made worse by dry weather conditions. Hundreds of people have been evacuated, and firefighters are facing difficulties in combating the fires.
In Death Valley National Park, the air temperature rose to 53 degrees Celsius over the weekend. The US National Weather Service is urging people not to underestimate the life-threatening risks. Extreme weather has also struck the northeast of the country. Heavy rainfall in Pennsylvania caused sudden flooding, leading to the tragic deaths of at least five people.
Earlier on July 10, it was revealed that more than 61,000 people in Europe lost their lives due to the heatwave in the summer of 2022.
