On July 10, it was revealed that more than 61,000 people lost their lives due to the heatwave in the summer of 2022, Nature Medicine journal published in a research.
Scientists analyzed weekly data from Eurostat on all-cause mortality, categorized by gender and age, for the period from May 30 to September 4. According to the study's authors, a record-breaking heatwave in Europe resulted in the death of 61,672 individuals during this period. Comparatively, the usual mortality rate from heat during this period in European countries was 36,000.
In terms of absolute numbers, Italy recorded the highest number of heat-related deaths with 18,000 fatalities, followed by Spain with 11,300 deaths. Germany ranked third with 8,173 deaths, and France came fourth with 4,807 deaths. The relative mortality rate from heat per one million population was highest in Italy, Greece, Spain, and Portugal. Additionally, the mortality rate from heat among women was 56% higher compared to men.
