A tragic gas tank explosion at a barbecue restaurant in the eastern Chinese city of Yancheng has claimed the life of one person and left another injured. The incident has raised concerns about gas safety in the country, following a string of similar accidents in recent months.
The explosion occurred on July 17 at a popular barbecue restaurant located in a two-story commercial complex. Shocking footage shared online depicted the aftermath of the blast, showing multiple storefronts destroyed and debris scattered across the street. Rescuers were seen wheeling away an injured individual from the scene.
Authorities swiftly took action, detaining the owner of the restaurant. An investigation into the incident is currently underway to determine the cause of the explosion and ascertain any potential negligence or safety violations.
This tragic incident comes just weeks after a devastating gas explosion at a barbecue restaurant in the northwestern Ningxia region claimed the lives of 31 people, making it one of the deadliest blasts in recent years. Following the Ningxia explosion, president Xi Jinping urged officials to prioritize the identification and rectification of safety risks across the country.
Shockingly, the Yancheng blast marks the third explosion at a restaurant in less than a week. Another explosion occurred in Gansu province, leaving two people injured. These successive incidents have reignited concerns and sparked criticism on China's popular microblogging platform, Weibo.
Users on Weibo expressed their frustration and questioned whether sufficient measures were being taken to prevent such tragedies.
"Have we not learned our lesson?" wrote one user, reflecting the sentiments of many.
Another user emphasized the importance of self-checks, stating, "Those who run barbecue restaurants should all conduct self-checks."
Despite continuous efforts to improve safety standards, accidents caused by gas and chemical explosions remain a persistent problem in China. The nation has witnessed numerous incidents of this nature over the years, leading to calls for more stringent regulations and heightened vigilance among business owners.
