Venice, the picturesque city known for its canals and historic architecture, is currently facing a critical shortage of general practitioners (GPs). In response to this pressing issue, the city has launched an innovative campaign to attract family doctors from around the world to fill the upcoming vacancies caused by the retirement of 44 GPs in the coming years.
The campaign, "Doctor, the most beautiful city in the world awaits you!", has garnered attention and generated excitement among medical professionals. As part of the initiative, a captivating video message has been projected onto the iconic St John and Paul Hospital building for several days, capturing the attention of locals and visitors alike.
Recognizing the need for a robust healthcare system, the regional government has stepped in to provide highly competitive incentives aimed at attracting GPs from across the globe. One of the key offerings is an outpatient clinic available at a symbolic price, allowing doctors to establish their practice in the heart of Venice. Additionally, affordable rental housing options are being made available to the incoming doctors, facilitating their integration into the local community and hospital environment.
Manuela Lanzarin, the Veneto regional health counselor, emphasized the government's commitment to facilitating the care of patients and citizens.
"We are trying to offer an outpatient clinic at a symbolic price and a house for rent at a decent price, to connect them with the staff and with the hospital, with the activity in the hospital, precisely to facilitate the care of the patient, of the person, of the citizen," Lanzarin stated.
The campaign has already yielded positive responses from doctors both within Italy and abroad. Medical professionals from Italy and Brazil have shown interest in the available positions, enticed by the unique opportunity to practice medicine in the enchanting city of Venice.
The remuneration for the incoming GPs is highly competitive, with average monthly salaries ranging from $2,805 to $5,611 net, depending on their experience and patient load. In addition, the doctors will be provided with a parking space at the entrance to the city, further easing their daily commute and ensuring convenient access to their patients.
The urgency behind this campaign stems from the fact that the majority of the city's 44 family doctors will reach the retirement age of 70 in the coming years. To ensure the uninterrupted provision of healthcare services to the local population and the millions of tourists who visit Venice each year, it is crucial to attract a new generation of skilled and dedicated GPs to fill these impending vacancies.
