Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida engaged in a brief summit with EU leaders Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel in Brussels on Thursday, Mission of Japan to the EU announces on Twitter.
Following the summit, the EU announced the lifting of food import restrictions that were imposed after the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011, with the hope that Japan would reciprocate by easing controls on EU farm products. These restrictions, which involved pre-export radioactivity checks on food and agricultural feed from Japan, have been gradually reduced over the years.
The EU's decision to fully lift the remaining restrictions was welcomed by Prime Minister Kishida, who emphasized that Japan continues to monitor radioactivity and should make its findings public. In addition to the food import issue, both sides agreed to collaborate on removing trade barriers for EU beef, fruit, and vegetables, which currently face limitations due to Japanese food safety rules.
The summit also highlighted deeper cooperation between the EU and Japan in areas such as green and digital transitions, research, security, and critical raw materials. Furthermore, the joint statement issued by the EU and Japan condemned Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine and called for the complete withdrawal of Russian military forces from the country.
