The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has issued an apology for the substandard care provided to iconic hip-hop artist MF DOOM, whose real name was Daniel Dumile. The revered rapper passed away unexpectedly on October 31, 2020, while receiving treatment at St. James's Hospital in Leeds. The apology comes after Dumile's widow, Jasmine Dumile, raised concerns about the quality of care he received during his hospital stay. The hospital has issued an apology, three years after the rap icon died at the age of 49.
Hamish McLure, the chief medical officer of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, expressed his condolences to Dumile's family, friends, and fans during this difficult time. McLure acknowledged that the care provided to Dumile did not meet the expected standards, and he apologized for the lapse. Following Dumile's tragic death, the trust conducted a thorough investigation into the incident and shared the findings with his family.
"We have implemented several measures in response to this incident, and the broader lessons learned will be incorporated into various clinical specialties as part of our teaching curriculum. Additionally, we support the coroner's recommendation for clearer national guidance and increased awareness in this area," McLure stated.
The apology from the NHS trust follows an inquest into Dumile's death, where it was revealed that there were missed opportunities in his treatment. The rapper had been suffering from multiple conditions, including kidney failure, type 2 diabetes, heart failure, and Hepatitis B. His cause of death was angioedema, a sudden swelling often triggered by an allergic reaction.
During the inquiry, assistant coroner Janine Wolstenholme highlighted that Dumile's care plan was incomplete and that doctors had been falsely reassured about his condition. Wolstenholme described the rapper's death as a rare event and stated that when Dumile complained about the worsening swelling, it should have prompted a review at the hospital.
In addition to the apology, Wolstenholme also expressed regret to Jasmine Dumile for the extended duration it took to complete the inquest, acknowledging the distress caused by the prolonged process.
MF DOOM was widely acclaimed for his lyrical prowess and unique persona, and his untimely demise sent shockwaves throughout the music community.
