In an effort to help customers reduce their baggage and carbon footprint, Japan Airlines launched a clothing rental service called "Any Wear, Anywhere," on July 5. This innovative initiative allows passengers to rent a bundle of clothing in advance, which will be delivered to their hotel or Airbnb upon arrival in Japan. By encouraging travellers to pack light, the airline aims to minimise fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, and promote sustainable travel practices.
Partnering with Sumitomo Corporation, Japan Airlines has entrusted the reservation system and clothing fulfilment to ensure a seamless experience for customers. The service is currently being offered on a trial basis from July 5, 2023, to August 2024. Passengers have the flexibility to rent up to nine items of clothing, including a mix of tops, bottoms, and outerwear, for a period of two weeks. The available outfits are curated based on season, occasion, and size, with prices starting at $28 for five items.
As aviation's contribution to global carbon dioxide emissions raises concerns among environmentally conscious travellers, initiatives like Any Wear, Anywhere aim to provide practical solutions. Japan Airlines plans to track the impact of the service by measuring the reduction in checked-in baggage and subsequent carbon dioxide emissions. The trial period will serve to evaluate user acceptance and the potential environmental value generated by this novel concept.
