Palestinians in the West Bank city of Jenin set fire to tires and protested following an Israeli raid that targeted a command center for militant fighters.
The Israeli military stated that it struck a "joint operations center" used by the Jenin Brigades, an armed unit comprising fighters from various militant groups. Local residents reported that the attack, which took place early on July 3, involved a missile fired from the air and resulted in the death of at least one person.
Israel has been conducting regular raids in Jenin, a city in the northern West Bank, where Palestinian militant groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad maintain a significant presence. Last month, Israeli forces carried out a drone strike in the area, marking the first such operation in the West Bank since 2006. The details of whether this recent strike also involved a drone were not specified by the Israeli military.
The Palestinian health ministry confirmed one fatality and one injury as a result of the attack. Witnesses stated that a missile had struck a house, causing smoke to emanate from the wreckage. The Israeli military described the targeted site as an "advanced observation and reconnaissance center," as well as a weapons and explosives storage facility, and a coordination and communications hub for the militant fighters. The military provided an aerial photograph indicating that the building was in close proximity to two schools and a medical center.
Tensions in the region have been escalating, with an increase in violence witnessed in recent months. Prior to the drone strike in June, Israeli forces employed helicopter gunships to extract troops and vehicles from a raid on Jenin. The operation was conducted in response to explosives used by militants during an attempted arrest of two suspects.
Following the Israeli raid, Palestinians in Jenin expressed their anger and frustration by setting fire to tires and protesting military action. The incident further exacerbates the already strained relations between Israel and Palestine, adding fuel to the ongoing conflict in the region.
