A differentiated parking payment system is set to be introduced in Almaty this autumn, according to a statement by the city's mayor, Erbolat Dossaev, Gazeta.uz reports with reference to Zakon.kz.
The system aims to implement varied parking fees, with higher rates in the city center and progressively lower rates as one moves away from the center, following the global practice. Dossaev expressed his hope to finalize this initiative by September and present it to the city council for approval.
Furthermore, the city administration plans to present a concept for a unified parking space in Almaty, encompassing all eight districts of the city. The objective is to address the issue of insufficient parking spaces by legalizing street parking areas. Dossaev acknowledged the presence of unofficial parking spots along the streets in the city and emphasized the need to develop appropriate infrastructure to regulate and formalize them.
The revenue generated from paid parking will be allocated to the district budgets to support infrastructure development. Almaty, with a daily influx of up to 800,000 vehicles, aims to utilize these funds to improve the districts' facilities, as stated by the mayor.
In addition, the Almaty city administration is considering the implementation of mechanical parking systems within the city. These parking facilities, located in confined spaces such as courtyards, can accommodate an average of 12 to 16 vehicles using innovative technologies. Dossaev highlighted that this approach would help alleviate traffic congestion and ensure smoother road passages.
Through these measures, Almaty seeks to enhance its parking management system, optimize the utilization of available spaces, and improve the overall urban infrastructure.
