Lab-grown meat, also known as cultured meat, has been granted temporary permission for sale in the United States, marking a significant milestone. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued a permit to Upside Foods and Good Meat, as reported by DW, based on statements from the companies.
This development makes the USA the second country, following Singapore, to legalize the sale of lab-grown meat. Upside Foods hailed it as a "dream come true" and the "start of a new era."
Both American companies primarily focus on chicken production. The lab-grown meat is derived from animal cells cultured and grown in stainless steel containers until they reach the desired stage.
Upside Foods and Good Meat initially intended to supply cultured meat to upscale restaurants. As production scales up, they plan to make it available in grocery stores, expanding its reach to a wider consumer base.
