China's foreign ministry has responded to US President Joe Biden's calling President of China Xi Jinping a "dictator". They claimed that this breached China's political dignity and amounted to public political provocation.
On June 20, Biden made the following statement at a fundraising event in California:
"The reason why Xi Jinping got very upset, in terms of when I shot that balloon down with two box cars full of spy equipment in it, was he didn't know it was there," Mr Biden said at the event.
"That's a great embarrassment for dictators. When they didn't know what happened," he added.
At the news conference, ministry spokesperson Mao Ning expressed significant discontent and disagreement.
China's foreign ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, characterized President Biden's statement as "highly illogical and reckless." During a routine press conference on Wednesday, she criticized the remarks as an "overt political act of provocation" that disregarded established diplomatic norms and etiquette.
Biden made the statements on June 20 at a fundraiser in California, a day after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Xi during a trip to China aimed at lowering tensions between the two countries.
