An international project has been launched in Russia, inviting participants to uncover the battlefield where the forces of Khan Tokhtamysh clashed with Amir Timur, the founder of the Timurid Empire, shaping the destiny of the Golden Horde. This endeavor, reported by TASS and the press services of Samara University, involves a large-scale archaeological project.
Researchers from Russia and Uzbekistan will analyze various aspects of the military, political, and socio-economic situation in Eurasia during the late 14th century. Their ultimate goal is to pinpoint the exact location of one of Russia's significant historical battles—the bloody clash between the armies of Khan Tokhtamysh of the Golden Horde and Amir Timur from Central Asia.
The pilot project encompasses drafting a comprehensive plan, establishing key research directions, and assembling dedicated scientific teams. Reconnaissance of the terrain will be conducted in four regions of the Samara area: Sergievskoye, Koshkinskoye, Yelkhovskoye, and Krasnoyarskoye. To achieve this, cutting-edge tools such as unmanned aerial vehicles and remote sensing technology will be utilized.
Additionally, scientists will devise expedition routes and archaeological excavation plans, determining priority fieldwork locations. Notably, this project extends beyond the realms of archaeology and history, capturing the attention of chemists, optical physicists, geophysicists, biologists, and experts from various scientific disciplines.
The participation of several universities and research institutions from Uzbekistan and different regions of Russia has been announced, including the Research Institute for the Study of Cultural Heritage and Tourism Development under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Shakhrisabz State Museum-Reserve, the Shigabutdin Marjani Institute of History, the Alfred Khalykov Institute of Archaeology under the Academy of Sciences of Tatarstan, and others. Serving as the primary organizer and coordinator, Samara University leads this international, interdisciplinary research.
In 1391, Amir Timur sought to stop Khan Tokhtamysh's raids by launching a campaign against the Golden Horde. In June, Timur's 200,000-strong army dealt a major blow to Tokhtamysh's forces in the Samara region. Despite the Khan's escape, four years later, Timur decisively defeated him at the Terek River. Historians widely consider these events in 1391 and 1395 to have had a significant impact on the fate of the Golden Horde.
